from manuscript to app. the promotion of the work of Louis Couperus (1890-2017)

15 October 2017 - 12 May 2018

The promotion of the work of Louis Couperus started around 1890 with beautiful Art Nouveau book covers and brochures issued by his publisher, L.J. Veen, to personal dedications by the author himself. During the first quarter of the twentieth century many of his novels were translated, especially into English and German. Over the years, many of his novels were put on stage right up to this very winter, whith Toneelgroep Amsterdam's adaptation of The Books of the Small Souls (from 1900). Since the Second World War, films, a documentary and even an opera were made after his work. Around the year 2000 Couperus went digital and thirteen years later, a literary app was developed featuring a walk through The Hague along the places that feature in his books or in his life. All these developments are being displayed in this special exhibition. Much of the works on show come from the personal collection of Jan Eekhof in the Museum of Literature and have never been seen before.

The exhibition was made possible by financial contributions from the J.E. Jurriaanse Stichting, the Van Ommeren-de Voogt Stichting and the Stichting Thurkow Fonds.
